Fox and Rabbit Shop

Fox and Rabbit is a delightful tiny shop with a « candy store » feel,  located on Vaasankatu, which opened in 2011 by owner Henna, who also happens to have her very own jewelry line : www.designmerrygoround.fi

The store sells different pieces of jewelry such as necklaces, earrings and rings, but also souvenirs, tea cups, postcards & notebooks,  and little decoration items for your home.  You can also buy gifts for guys, such as old records or 2nd hand shop findings. In short there is a huge variety of little treasures in this fabulous fairytale-like little boutique.

Each year, the shop’s selection expands, and Fox and Rabbit now has over 30 designers. At the beginning, Henna showcased jewelry from people that she knew, and sold them on various markets and fairs. Once she opened her shop, she’s been receiving daily emails and posts from other designers. She insists on meeting them in person, as she finds it easier to be more specific and connect with the product and its story.
What Inside Out Helsinki loves about Fox and Rabbit is it’s very street-wise feel. This is not your typical jewelry shop: it’s very small, but never cluttered and there’s always space to wander around. The feeling of the store is very down to earth, and it’s especially nice to know that the owner knows the designers.

=> if you are on a tight budget, Inside Out Helsinki especially recommends the adorable post cards, always a change from the typical touristic cards out there.

=> Good to know: you can find the products on the website (e.g. recycling bags/jewelry/key chains…) www.foxandrabbitshop.fi

Gallery Huuto

Galleria Huuto is one of Helsinki's go-to art galleries for a variety of reasons.First of all, it has the uniqueness of being located in two places. Its first location, Uudenmaankatu, is in the Punavuori district, otherwise known as Helsinki's design destrict. This gallery is smaller, and usually showcases more traditional mediums, such as painting or photography. More recently Huuto branched out and opened a venue, Jätkäsaari, in Helsinki's dock harbor neighborhood. This gallery is bigger, and has 3 different exhibition spaces: Jätkä 1 and 2, and smaller room for video artists. You can almost always find someone to talk to you about the different art pieces there, which is agreeable and not always the case in contemporary art venues.Huuto makes it a point not to specialize in a certain genre: it is open to a variety of different contemporary international artists, and targets especially younger emerging artists as well as experimental art. More like an art collective than a gallery per sae, Huuto functions a lot on a voluntary-based model, and collaborates with a number of other institutions, such as Helsinki International Art Program (HIAP).When we visited Huuto for our article, we had the chance to encounter three special artist shows, which  gives you a good idea of Huuto's philosophy:

Jätkä 2 Emilia Niskasaari, Pirjetta Brander, Landfill

The Helsinki based-duo Emilia Niskasaari and Pirjetta Brander have created an installation made of recycled cardboard paper, Landfill, which gives an anguishing feel of birds smashing into one another, but also, paradoxically, leaves you with an ethereal impression of a child's room left behind after chaos.

Jätkä 1 Videokaffe, Standing alone

Videokaffe an international and interdisciplinary art collective that created an interactive installation, Standing Alone, for its show at Huuto. Standing Alone means that each piece is of a different member of a collective, and can be viewed in itself.

Pikkujätkä Hinni Huttunen,
SLEEVELESS / FEARLESS

Finnish artist Hinni Huttunen screened in Huuto's video room, Sleeveless/Fearless :  a video work which questions our relationship to beauty norms, while the artist's arms jiggle in a hypnotic-type trance, as the video loops.

Galleria Huuto Lounge area
When entering the venue you feel like you are in a big artist loft in Brooklyn. The atmosphere is laid back, the ceilings high, and there is a general art-friendly atmosphere to the place.

Onda

If you are looking for a delicious place to eat, at a low price but in an original and home-like setting, then Onda restaurant is the place to go. Onda opened in October 2014 by Jussi, Maya and Peetteri. It can be described as an eatery-type bistro, and gallery, that offers both lunch and dinner (with 3 starters and 4 main meals).

They offer weekend and week specific meals, and both meat and vegetarian options. During the weekdays they have a lunch-time buffet and their food is mainly organic.
What Inside Out Helsinki particularly appreciates is that Onda makes everything from scratch, with no preheating and frozen food. Their food reflects the change in season, which is particularly interesting for a restaurant in a country such as Finland, where the change in seasons is so drastic.
During the warmer months, you can enjoy the food on their sunny terrace, and they are planning on extending their opening hours.

All of the owners have traveled a lot and, for example, Maya had a hostel in Peru, so the ambiance is a mix of different cultures, which is quite refreshing and original in a city such as Helsinki.
They also make their very own recipes for the food.
=> We recommend the falafel, which is an original recipe made with hemp seeds.
=> Good to know: The lunch buffet is open from 11 to 3 o’clock. And on Saturdays they offer a Peruvian brunch (table reservations recommended).
